  • International Comparative Performance of India's Research Base (2009-2014) by Sarah Huggett, Thomas Gurney, and Anton Jumelet

International Comparative Performance of India's Research Base (2009-2014)

Sarah Huggett, Thomas Gurney, and Anton Jumelet

India's Department of Science & Technology commissioned this report from Elsevier to add to its understanding of India's research performance over time and in comparison with other countries/regions overall and in subject areas relevant to S&T. This study presents data on three main bibliometric indicator types:

    • Measures of publication output, growth, and impact
    • Analysis of international, national, and institutional collaboration and the resulting publication output, growth, and impact
    • Evaluation of the transfer of knowledge between sectors

  • Sustainability Science in a Global Landscape by Analytical Services, Elsevier

Sustainability Science in a Global Landscape

    Analytical Services, Elsevier

Science, technology and innovation have long been recognized as the basis for socioeconomic development. They are also core contributors to sustainable development and to meeting the SDGs. The UN has called for a “seat for science” on the High-Level Political Forum that deals with the UN’s sustainable development agenda, to ensure that “science is not just an observer but an advisor to policymakers.” This report is part of a broader, on-going effort to provide more evidence and analysis on the role of science, technology and innovation in the global agenda of sustainable development. This report examines the status of sustainability science as a research field.

  • The Illinois Science and Technology Roadmap by Illinois Science & Technology Coalition, Elsevier, Ocean Tomo, and Leff Communications

The Illinois Science and Technology Roadmap

Illinois Science & Technology Coalition, Elsevier, Ocean Tomo, and Leff Communications

This effort builds on recent economic development plans from the State of Illinois and City of Chicago and responds specifically to community interest—from research institutions, R&D-based corporations, and policy makers in Springfield and Washington, D.C.—in having a more informed and detailed understanding of Illinois’ R&D potential. Utilizing top analysis tools from Elsevier, Ocean Tomo, and Dr. C. Scott Dempwolf at the University of Maryland, the roadmap offers an unprecedented look into technology clusters that represent opportunities, both realized and potential, for innovation to improve business competitiveness and position Illinois as a magnet for top talent in key industries. We expect the roadmap and its underlying analysis to serve as a valuable resource for institutions, industry, and policy makers, making this report a beginning rather than an end to developing strong innovation policy in the state. As this report demonstrates, Illinois is rich in R&D activity.

  • A Decade of Development in Sub-Saharan African Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics Research by World Bank and Elsevier

A Decade of Development in Sub-Saharan African Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics Research

    World Bank and Elsevier

The World Bank and Elsevier are partnering on this report to examine the research enterprise over a decade from 2003 to 2012 of three different geographies in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA): West & Central Africa (WC), East Africa (EA), Southern Africa (SA). The research performance of these regions is compared to that of South Africa (ZA), Malaysia, and Vietnam; the latter two countries had a comparable research base to the SSA regions at the beginning of the period of analysis. The report analyzes all science disciplines, but with a special emphasis on research in the Physical Sciences & Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The report focuses on research output and citation impact, important indicators of the strength of a region’s research enterprise. These indicators are correlated with the region’s long-term development and important drivers of economic success. Moreover, research is a key ingredient for quality higher education. Given the shortcomings of reliable statistics on education and research in Africa, we hope the information contained in a bibliometric database will shed light on regional collaboration within Africa, academia-business collaboration, and STEM capacity.

The Water and Food Nexus: Trends and Development of the Research Landscape

Britt-Louise Anderson, Christiane Barranguet, Jens Berggren, Judith Kamalski, Iris Kisjes, and Alexander van Servellen

This WATER AND FOOD NEXUS: Trends and Development of the Research Landscape report is jointly prepared by SIWI and Elsevier, and was motivated by a previous study whose findings were presented by Elsevier at the 2010 Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable (GUIRR)2 meeting in Washington DC. At Elsevier the study has been executed by the SciVal Analytics unit with guidance from experts in the field of water research from the Aquatic and Green Sciences portfolio and Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI).
